2) Bahia Principe
When looking for an
affordable Puerto Plata all inclusive, it is not uncommon to come across one
name very frequently- the Bahia Principe.
Boasting of verdant surroundings, comfortable lodging that does not
leave the pockets taxed and a host of amenities that will enhance the holiday
experience of their guests, this resort seems every bit the ideal place for a
relaxing sojourn.
Yet, a cursory glance through the reviews of this hotel
reveals that many a customers were left less than satisfied with the offerings
of the establishment. So, should you take your business to the Bahia Principe
in a bid to save a few bucks or would it be better to simply switch over to one
of the other 5 star resorts of the area like the Casa
Colonial Beach and Spa?
The location
Surrounded by lush vegetation and sprawling grounds, the
Bahia Principe does offer the definitive tropical environment for a delightful
vacation. With over 900 rooms in the resort, this is by no means a puny
property. On the contrary, there is a lot that you can explore. In fact, you
could easily spend the first day or two enjoying the offerings of the resort
and the beach which is just a stone’s throw away.
Located in the quiet suburb of Rio San Juan, the hotel
provides the quintessential Dominican Republic experience to its vacationers.
However, given the startling economic disparity in the country, mingling with
the locals may not prove to be as exhilarating an experience as it is made out
to be.
The amenities and the
general look
The architecture of the Bahia Principe seamlessly blends
modern element with traditional uniqueness. The lobby of the resort is one of
its USP’s; the space is large and luxurious, perfect for a round of mingling
with the other guests or just to spend some time in an authentic tropical
setting.
The bamboo décor that offsets beautifully against the
pristine white structures and the thatched roofs add a unique allure to the
ambience. As far as the amenities are concerned, you get all amenities that you
would expect from an inclusive of Puerto Plata. For instance, in the room, you
are offered everything from satellite TV to a Jacuzzi, a private terrace or
balcony and internet access.
The resort also has a salon, shops, restaurants, bars, tour
desk, 24 hour front desk, dry cleaning services, doctor on call, provisions for
disabled guests, business center, conference rooms and more. Also, the Bahia
Principe has separate smoking and non smoking sections, so you do not have to
contend with the objectionable smell of cigarettes in your room.
What works for Bahia
Principe?
Although the resort is ensconced in a quiet neighborhood of
the country, for a traveling family, there is a lot to do in the area. With two
aqua parks and its proximity to the beach, guests will certainly not want for
entertainment options. The Magante Beach which is just off the property is
perfect for some fun in the sun while its namesake city that surrounds the area
has a myriad of tourist attractions.
The spa is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the resort.
Guests can enjoy a rejuvenating massage right on the beach in one of the open
air huts which undoubtedly raise the relaxation quotient of the entire
experience. When traveling with kids, there are enough activities to keep them
occupied which leaves parents with ample of time for some grown up fun.
What does not work in
favor of this hotel?
Accommodation is a
hit or miss at the Bahia Principe; you may get an amazing room with the perfect
view and all the amenities to make your stay enjoyable or you could end up with
a shoddy space which leaves a lot to be desired. Why, some guests have even
complained of unkempt rooms that are infested with pests.
The size of the
resort also works as a two sided sword; if every amenity that they advertise
would be up and running, this resort would undoubtedly be the best in town.
Alas, that is not to be. Often of the eight on ground bars, only one is open.
So, getting a drink entails a walk of a good 20 minutes and then a wait in line
for another 15 minutes. After all this, you are served a hosed down concoction
that will in all likelihood leave you with a bad taste.
Our verdict!
Although they did put in a recent round of renovation, the
resort still has to do plenty to justify its four star rating. So, if saving on
the trip is a priority, this hotel offers some of the cheapest accommodation in
the area. However, if it is luxury that you seek and cost is no object, head
over to one of the upscale facilities in the area.
Casa Colonial
Beach & Spa
A quaint resort that combines modern luxury with the
grandeur of an era gone by, the Cass Colonial Beach & Spa has built up a
stellar fan following over the years. The picturesque setting of the beach
front property further adds to its appeal along with gorgeous period furniture,
some stunning pieces of art and a staff that is willing to go out of its way to
make your stay comfortable.
An ideal example of a boutique hotel, the Casa Colonial only
has 50 rooms, so its offers a perfect blend of personalized service and the
amenities that can only be expected from a 5 start commercial establishment in
the tropics.
Although guest and critics alike have been raving about the
fabulous offerings of this resort, most agree that these facilities do come at
a slightly higher than normal price tag.
So, should you loosen those purse strings or head to a budget Puerto
Plata all inclusive like the Bahia Principe?
The location
Possibly the most
picturesque part of Puerto Plata, the resort is surrounded by abundant greenery
and the grounds are large enough to afford a leisurely stroll through paths
that meander along hill tops and even a water fall. The beach front complex
also offers unhindered access to a private sand strip that is hidden away from
the throngs of tourists who frequent the shoreline of the country.
For those who would
like to explore some of the attractions in the area, a visit to the Fortaleza San Felipe is highly
recommended. Another tourist attraction
in the vicinity is the Birgenair Flight 301 Memorial. If you would like a
change of scene when enjoying the beach and the sun, heading over to Long Beach
only takes a few minutes.
The amenities and the
general look
The look of Casa Colonia is what attracts most guests to
this gorgeous resort. As you enter the complex, you are greeted by a
scintillating blend of luxury, tranquility, opulence and serenity. The resort
is an elegant facility that offers the best of what money can buy; from fine
wines to sumptuous dining and from rejuvenating spa treatments to the prospect
of just lazing around on the beach working on that perfect sun kissed look.
Amenities in the room include just about everything that you
would expect from a high end facility like a Jacuzzi, balcony that opens
towards the beach or the verdant grounds, satellite TV, coffee maker, iron,
minibar, internet port and more. The hotel offers convenient parking options
for its guests, so you can rent your very own. Also, a local shuttle service is
provided that ferries visitors to nearby tourist attractions.
What works for the
Casa Colonial Spa and Resort?
This is one of the few high end luxury resorts in an area
that is littered with budget establishments which often send guests scampering
away. There are two dining options on site; the Lucia which does whip up a
memorably delicious fare and verandah dining which is open for breakfast and
lunch.
The spa in the facility offers a range of impressive
treatments; this coupled with the friendly and helpful staff make for a truly
enjoyable stay. The roof top pool is another unique feature of the
facility. The heated waters are just
right for a swim even when there is thunder storm brewing outside.
What does not work in
favor of this?
Everything is truly priced higher than it should be. While
nobody can fault the location or the ambience of Casa Colonial, these alone do
not justify the higher price tag. The food is good but there is a limited
selection given that there is only one restaurant on site.
Also, most guests walk in to the resort expecting a quiet
and serene environment which will be just right for a relaxing sojourn for
adults. Now, depending on the time of year when you visit the facility, you may
very well be confronted by kids throwing up a ruckus all over the grounds and
the hotel staff is often incapable of controlling the situation.
Even if you were to overlook the rambunctious tots, there
are these budget hotels in close vicinity that have a penchant for playing
macaraena style music at full volume. This is undoubtedly very vexing after the
first evening as it turns into a nightly issue.
Our verdict!
If luxury and top of the line service are important to your
overall vacation experience and you do not mind shelling out a little more for
these, then the Casa Colonial will be just right for you. However, if you are
looking for an accommodation option that does not burn a hole in your pockets,
take your business to one of the other Puerto Plata all inclusive in the area.
ClubHotel Riu
Bachata
The third among the trinity of ClubHotel Resorts at this
massive complex, the Riu Bachata is built on a small peninsula at the Maimon
Bay. Made of quaint bungalows that house rooms of various sizes and categories,
guests do get a range of options when choosing their accommodation as well as
the amenities. There are also some distinct benefits to staying at a resort as
large as this.
For one, you have complete access to the bars, restaurants
and other facilities of the sister resorts like the Clubhotel
Riu Mambo and Riu Merengue that line the property. In fact, most of
these are at a walking distance and given the abundance of vegetation around,
you are bound to enjoy the pathways across the sprawling complex.
One of the distinctive benefits of choosing the ClubHotel
Riu Bachata over its sister resorts or any other all inclusive in Puerto Plata
is the opportunity to enjoy a majestic sunset at the very tip of the jutting
piece of land. Fortunately, for their patrons, the management has left this
part of the peninsula untouched giving it an extraordinarily picturesque
appeal.
The location
Located in the Puerto Plata region of the Dominican Republic,
the complex is built along the beach and against a verdant mountain range. It
is only a stone’s throw away from some of the popular tourist attractions of
the area and a short drive from the airport.
A family out on their tropical sojourn will find as much to
do outside the resort as they will inside. The private beach further adds to
the appeal of the resort. Then, there is the lure of a range of beach
activities; from lounging in the sun to conquering the fairly safe waters with
a surf board and more.
The amenities and the
general look
With over 600 rooms divided over several 3 and four storey,
whitewashed bungalows, the ClubHotel Riu Bachata is by no means a small resort;
au contraire, it holds its own against the sister hotels in the complex as well
as other comparative establishments in the area.
The amenities offered
include a range of in room services and facilities like satellite TV, internet
access, telephone, bathtub, minibar and room service. These are at par with
those provided by most high end all inclusives of Puerto Plata.
Also, on offer are a range of live entertainment options, a
game room, gift shops, boutiques and babysitting services. The resort has 3
pools, one with a swim up bar that serves up some delicious concoction. There are
also three onsite restaurants that whip up fairly decent dishes.
What works for the ClubHotel Riu Bachata?
The location of this hotel is undoubtedly one of its plus
points; add to this the host of facilities and on site recreational choices and
it is easy to understand why many guests bid adieu to the complex with fond
memories. The staff is friendly and the entertainment is good.
The rooms are sparingly furnished, so while you are not
going to get 5 star luxuries, the accommodation does have everything people
need to make their stay pleasurable. There are two tennis courts on site and
the par 32 golf course at Costa Azul is easily accessible by car. The resort also boasts of a high end spa that
is perfect for unwinding after a day spent frolicking in the sun.
What does not work in
favor of this hotel?
The location along the beach is both a boon and a curse;
depending on the time of the year when you visit the resort, you may be treated
to an unspoilt expanse of white sand or you may find a half washed out beach
littered with seaweed. Of course, the proximity of the complex to the ocean
also means that it’s among the first few places to experience water logging in
case of a thunder storm.
Unfortunately, the remnants of the last few hurricanes can
be seen clearly around the grounds and many suites that are still damp and
smell of mildew. However, this certainly does not stop the staff from assigning
these rooms to hapless clients.
Our verdict!
In terms of onsite
entertainment and location, the Riu Bachata does score better than many of the
Puerto Plata all inclusives. In fact, if you willing to hassle with the front
desk staff when you are shown to a less than perfect room, this hotel might
actually work for you. However, if you
are looking for a perfect vacation experience; one that combines luxury,
comfort and entertainment, you may want to take your business elsewhere.
ClubHotel Riu
Mambo
A part of the distinguished Club Hotel chain, the Riu Mambo,
with its 499 rooms, is built on an expansive piece of land. Because it is part
of a huge complex, guests are treated to a mind boggling array of amenities and
entertainment venues. Although its sheer size is what brings most to this
resort, the low tariffs have also helped in making this hotel a popular choice
among travelers.
Unfortunately, the cyber space is littered with tales of how
guests were left to grapple in sub standard rooms that lacked even the most
basic comforts. So, if this has held you back from booking a suite at the ClubHotel
Riu Mambo, here is an attempt to analyze the veracity of all those reviews.
The location
First timers as well as regulars will tell you that Puerto
Plata is the most happening region of the Dominican Republic. With its selection of hotels, this quaint
town offers the best of tropical splendor and urban living. The area boasts of
several water parts, memorials, tourist attractions, shops and a thriving night
life. And, what better way to experience all of these than to stay right in the
center of it all.
A beach front property like many others, the ClubHotel Riu Mambo
is perfect when you want to spend the day languishing on the beach but are also
keen on exploring local products and sights. The city of Bajo Hondo is only a
short drive away and it definitely merits a visit. Other attractions in the
area include the Puerto Pastilla and Confresi beaches, at least 2 aqua parks, a
public library and more.
The amenities and the
general look
Built against a backdrop of rolling hills, the resort is two
minutes away from the beach. In fact, only a line of willowy palms separates
the property from the shoreline. The mammoth size of the estate translates to
more by way of entertainment and amenities.
When traveling with
the family, you will find that the resort has several options to keep the kids
entertained, so you will get to spend more time on the beach. Live
entertainment forms a part of the hotel’s many offerings along with a host of
facilities like an in room Jacuzzi, TV, telephone, minibar, internet access and
more.
What works for the
ClubHotel Riu Mambo?
The private beach which is impressively maintained and a
pool area with enough lounge chairs definitely work in favor of the Riu Mambo.
The hotel offers a range of water sports options; from kayaking to sea fishing
and more. The package includes a few excursions around town which offer a fun
filled way of exploring the countryside and even delightful city tours that are
just right to pick a few mementoes.
The entertainment staff is exceptional and they do manage to
gently nudge everybody into participating in the range of activities that the
hotel offers without being obnoxiously pushy. After all, the prospect of
mingling with the other guest and just having a gala time with a group is one
of the advantages of staying at a resort of this size.
What does not work in
favor of this hotel?
Yes, there are three hotels clubbed in a single complex
which means that you get the benefits of three for the price of one;
unfortunately, this also equals to three times the issues and concerns than
what you would normally face at a comparative establishment.
For one, most guests are happy with the resort as well as
the staff till Mother Nature decides on wreaking havoc with some torrential
rain. This is when the rooms turn dank and musty; unfortunately, little is done
to restore them to a habitable state. So, if you are out of luck, you may just
be handed the key to one such suite and the staff is not always cooperative.
Because there are two sister resorts at the complex; the ClubHotel Riu Merengue being one of them, The Riu
Mambo management often entertains locals at their restaurants and they in turn
trash the place beyond recognition. Also, the hotel is in the habit of simply
closing down one of the facilities and guests are expected to make their way to
the neighboring resort in search of food and beverages.
Our verdict!
If you are traveling in fair weather season, this resort may
meet your expectations but once it starts pouring, the whole complex is in a
state of flooding. Even when it is nice and sunny outside, the staff is known
to turn rude for no apparent reason at all. So, all in all, go to this
establishment only if you intend to spend no more than a few hours every day in
your room and at the resort.
ClubHotel Riu
Merengue
Nestled between green hills and a white sandy beach with
turquoise, beckoning waters, the ClubHotel Riu Merengue offers upscale,
luxurious accommodation choices in the Puerto Plata area. This is an all
inclusive resort where guests are treated to a range of dining and
entertainment options. Because the hotel is part of a very large hospitality
complex that combines three establishments, there is ample of space for
exploration.
Although the size of the estate ought to work in its
benefit, many visitors complain about how the availability of too many rooms
has led to neglect. While the management prides itself in maintaining some of
the lowest tariffs in the area, the question remains- are they just trying to
make a quick buck at the expense of their guileless guests?
The location
For several years now, the Puerto Plata area has been a huge
hit with the tourists who frequent the Dominican Republic and this has resulted
in a range of hotels and resorts cropping up in the region. Most of these are
just outside the town center like the Riu Merengue which is a beach front
property that is in close vicinity of the most happening night spots and
shopping areas.
With over 650 rooms that are housed in quaint two storey
structures, the ambience of the resort is undoubtedly more tranquil and affords
greater privacy than a towering complex. Built along the shoreline of the
Maimon Bay and against the backdrop of the impressive Puerto Plata range of
mountains, the resort is just a stone’s throw away from the famed Ocean World
Park which is very popular with most families.
In fact, when you
tire of the bars and restaurants of the Riu Merengue, you can simply head over
to the other establishments in the complex including those that are part of the
sister hotels like the ClubHotel Riu Bachata.
The amenities and the
general look
Tall willowy palms that are speckled across the entire
expanse of the grounds, comfy looking
lounge chairs that dot the entire area, two pools, an outdoor bar and enough vegetation
to delight even the more serious nature enthusiasts, these and more are offered by the Riu Merengue.
In terms of its looks and amenities, the hotel is no
different from the other budget all inclusives in Puerto Plata. Inside the rooms, you get the regular
balcony, Jacuzzi, telephone, TV, internet port, minibar. The resort offers live
entertainment every evening and a host of programs to keep their kiddie and
adult patrons happy.
What works for the
ClubHotel Riu Merengue?
Unlike some of the other hotels in the area, you stand a
greater chance of getting the right room at the very first attempt at the Riu
Merengue. The staff is known for their friendly and helpful demeanor and most
do not mind going out of their way to make their guests feel comfortable.
There are several tourist attractions in the area to offer a
glimpse into local life and visitors only need to take a cab or drive down for
a couple of minutes to reach these hotspots. Because the estate has several
bars and restaurants to its credit, you will get a lot of diversity in terms of
food and beverages.
With access to a private beach that is kept at its
immaculate best, guests will have a lot of opportunity to enjoy the famous fair
weather of the tropics. If you are a water sporting enthusiasts, the Riu
Merengue will not disappoint with its impressive array of services including
snorkeling, kayaking fishing, surfing and more.
What does not work in
favor of this establishment?
While some members of the staff do try to make their clients
comfortable, others and the management in general have assumed a complacent
attitude and this is reflected often in the subpar, on ground facilities and
amenities that simply don’t seem to work.
If you are lucky enough to walk into a room in which everything is up
and running, good for you.
However, God help if you are sent to a dwelling with a
faulty anything, you will have a harrowing time trying to get the staff to fix
it. The only novel solution that the folks at the help desk will come up with
for your woes will be an upgrade; unfortunately, this seldom helps.
So, although the resort has a lot of potential, some guests
are left utterly disillusioned by the overall treatment meted out to them while
some come back with a grand and memorable experience.
Our verdict!
If you were to
discount the private beach and the prospect of indulging in all those water
sporting activities, there is not a lot to lure guests over to the ClubHotel
Riu Merengue. In fact, it is like the scores of other hotels in its class and
many feel the resort is quite undeserving of its 3 and a half star rating.
In our opinion, this
facility does offer the best for the price that you pay for it. The rooms are
decent but it would be utterly disappointing to expect 5 start comforts,
cuisine or amenities. However, the frugal traveler will find many benefits to
staying at this establishment.
Hotetur Dorado
Club Resort
Another of the growing breed of affordable all inclusives of
Puerto Plata, the Hotetur Dorado Club Resort boasts of sprawling grounds, close
proximity to the beach, an impressive range of amenities and commitment to
service quality. The fact that this
hotel offers accommodation at a 40% less than its competitors has certainly
been drawing in the crowds.
Yet, many are
obviously concerned about what to expect from the establishment and if they
will be better off going to a higher priced facility that promises more in
terms of comforts and luxury. If you have been planning a vacation to the ever
popular Puerto Plata area of the Dominican Republic, here is a look at whether
you should consider Hotetur Dorado Club Resort as a possible accommodation
choice.
The location
The Puerto Plata region of the country is known for its
tranquil appeal and its impressive expanse of white sandy beaches. A beach front hotel like the Hotetur Dorado
Club Resort offers every reason to indulge in the natural offerings of the
tropics.
A mere half an hour’s drive from the airport, you can easily
find public transportation to and from the hotel or can rent your own car. The
resort is only ten minutes away from the town center of Puerto Plata, so you
can enjoy the best of urban offerings while coming back to the beach for some
surf and sand.
The amenities and the
general look
Hotetur Dorado Club Resort looks like most other hotels in
its class; it is almost standard for such establishments to have a pool or two,
a few restaurants and this resort is no different. In the room, they provide,
basic amenities like a telephone, T^V, internet port, a balcony, etc.
Offerings in the
common areas of the resort include high speed internet access, 24 hour
reception, laundry services, live entertainment, garden, bar, buffet breakfast
and more.
What works for the
Hotetur Dorado Club Resort?
This hotel scores over the others in its category because it
features a golf course, so for all you putting enthusiasts out there, it would
be hard to stay this close to the greens at the prices offered by Hotetur
Dorado Club Resort. A family resort, the facility offers a range of live
entertainment options that can be enjoyed by the kids as well as the grownups
along with special age specific programs for children.
The bar on the ground
serves up a range of lip smacking local concoctions and snacks. The garden
surrounding the estate is well maintained and has ample of lounge chairs placed
in just the right areas for the perfect view of the beach. The staff is
friendly and most speak English so communication will not be a problem.
What does not work in
favor of this hotel?
Built in 1982, the resort has been put through numerous
renovations but they have failed to upgrade every nook and corner of the
establishment. So, if you are lucky, you may end up in a well maintained room
with all amenities working in top condition the very first time.
Unfortunately, many
guests have had a completely opposite experience with busted temperature
control systems, poorly made up beds and in worst cases; they had to share the
room with bed bugs, roaches and more.
Now, depending on how many people are staying at the resort,
the staff may quickly upgrade you to a better suite if you are willing to show
them the color of money. However, if they are packed to capacity they will just
turn a deaf ear to your complaints.
Our verdict!
The golf course and
the well maintained hotel complex are definite advantages and if you are not
particularly picky, you should have a good time at the Hotetur Dorado Club
Resort. However, for those of you who appreciate a more luxurious setting, it
would be best to stay away from this hotel.
Iberostar Costa
Dorada
A near perfect combination of comfort, reasonable pricing,
an idyllic beach front location and enough lush greenery and amenities in the
surrounding to keep even the more discerning guests happy, the Iberostar Costa
Dorado stands tall among the hordes of budget Puerto Plata all inclusives in
the area with its loyal fan following.
The facility which is made of quaint 3 storey structures is
located in a secluded part of the Dominican Republic which works well for
people who seek a sojourn away from the throngs of tourists who visit the
country at peak times. While the Iberostar Costa Dorado is a resort with
immense potential, many believe this is hardly milked to its full potential and
the resort remains average at best. So, is there any truth to this claim?
The location
Not different from a lot of other resorts in the country
like the Occidental Allgero Play a Grande and
the likes, the Iberostar Costa Dorado also has its very own beachfront to boast
of. This means that guests can indulge in some serious fun in the sun by merely
stepping out of their room.
The 516 room, resort
is by no means small; in fact the small pathways that meander through its many
amenities and the willowy resident palms give this hotel an idyllic tropical
look. There are several tourist attractions not more than a short drive from
the facility.
Visitors who are traveling with children can have a ball of a
time at the Ocean world while those interested in some beach style fun will
find the Long and Dorado Beaches, which are in close proximity of the resort,
particularly interesting.
The amenities and the
general look
The space around the Iberostar Costa Dorado has been well
used to create a cozy and comfortable setting which offers the perfect mix of
seclusion and the typical commercial resort environment. There is ample of
greenery around the three storey units but if you are going to stay longer than
a week, the grounds are simply not large enough to entertain you night after
night.
In room amenities and those offered in the lobby are no
different than those provided by any other budget all inclusive in Puerto
Plata. Accommodation comes with a coffee maker, mini bar, balcony, TV and safe
while high speed internet and live entertainment are provided in the hotel in the
public areas.
Guest can also enjoy a range of water sports on site
including kayaking, snorkeling, wind surfing, live performances and family
activities. The facility has 2 pools and 2 tennis courts; while golfing greens
are not a part of the layout, the course at Costa Azul can be accessed easily.
What works for the Iberostar Costa Dorado?
The cost is definitely a plus; add to this the host of
entertainment options in the area, proximity to two beaches, the extensive
shoreline that the resort is located along and the myriad of amenities and it
is easy to understand why a lot of guests with their families choose this
establishment.
There are three al carte restaurants offering varying
cuisines and they do whip up a mean fare; which means that guests won’t have to
step out in search of food. The buffet is fairly good too. The resort also has
a maid service which certainly helps when traveling with young children.
What does not work in
favor of this hotel?
The Iberostar Costa
Dorado comes across as just another, run of the mill all inclusive in Puerto
Plata, certainly nothing to write home about.
In fact, the service does leave a lot to be desired. Guests have complained about just about
everything from the slow check in to the fact that the Brazilian and Mexican restaurants are not
always open and people are stuck with hastily thrown together local dishes.
Annoyingly similar to
a lot of budget accommodation options in the area, often people encounter some
of the very problems that they do at other hotels like rooms that are not clean
enough and amenities that fail to work as promised. In fact, it is not unusual for visitors to
request several upgrades before they actually reach a suite that meets their
expectations.
Our verdict!
While the Iberostar Costa Dorado is certainly not the worst
resorts in the Puerto Plata, it is far from being the best. Although the location of the hotel certainly
earns it some brownie points, the lax attitude of the staff can be a major turn
off.
So, if you are
looking for an affordable place to get back to at night while you spend the day
away on the famed shoreline of the Dominican Republic, this resort might work
for you. However, if you are expecting more by way of luxury, you will be
disappointed by the Iberostar Costa Dorado.
Jasmine Spa and
Wellness Holistic Health
The prospect of a wellness and holistic health center rolled
into a hotel that offers ample opportunities for rejuvenating those overwrought
mental and physical muscles sure is alluring. However, most travelers would
agree that there is more to a vacation in the tropics than just a relaxing
massage. So, does the Jasmine Spa and Wellness Holistic Health Center live up
to the standards set by some of the 5 star all inclusives of Puerto Plata or
does it leave guests yearning for more?
The location
Nestled among the best offerings of Mother Nature in the
Dominical Republic, the views from the verandas of the rooms and the dining
hall of the Jasmine Spa and Wellness Holistic Health are utterly breath taking.
The environment around the resort and
even the complex itself has an all pervading air of tranquility and quiet
serenity which is just right for some mindful contemplation.
Akin to a private sanctuary devoted to the wellness of the
mind and the body, the Jasmine Spa and Wellness Holistic Health Center sits on
a massive 40 acre piece of land.
Surrounded by an abundance of flora and fauna, the rainforest that
houses the resort has not been tampered with which adds an enticing quality to
the facility.
The best part is that this little piece of tranquil heaven
is easily accessible from some of the more popular commercial resorts in the
Puerto Plata are, such as the Iberostar Costa Dorado.
In fact, they send their car over to pick up even those guests who are just
coming over for a day treatment. However, the rocky road and the rickety car
does leave most travelers in dire need of a massage by the time they get to the
center.
The amenities and the
general look
With no more than a few rooms to its credit the Jasmine Spa
and Wellness Holistic Health Center is miles away from the commercial feel of
the regular resorts of Puerto Plata. Perched on fertile grounds, the complex is
surrounded by lush gardens with bountiful fruit trees and flowering shrubs that
add to the holistic feel of the place.
The mountains, the forest and the small massage huts that
are strategically placed in the midst of this setting are perfect for a
relaxing time. Visitors are encouraged
to trek through the numerous trails around the estate and explore the natural
diversity of the area.
Whether you explore the grounds on foot or horseback, you
are bound to come up on one of the many waterfalls that grace the forestland.
The gentle chiming of the water as it gushes past the stone and the
unmistakable fragrance of wet mud is enough to send most into a trance like
state.
What works for the?
The holistic environ may not be suitable for everybody but if you seek a sojourn that is away from
the beach grind and the mundane tropical experience, then the Jasmine Spa and
Wellness Holistic Health Center will certainly cater to your unique
requirements.
The establishment offers a wide array of treatments along
with a plethora of natural entertainment pursuits. So, although there will be
no blaring music here, you can certainly enjoy as round of yoga or a meringue
class or even some meditation and more.
What does not work in
favor of this?
This sure is a labor of love but the management certainly
needs to be more concerned about the well being and comfort of their guests
than they are. Although this establishment is not marketed as a typical
resort, this is definitely no ashram
either. For one, you are paying a lot
more than you would for the Spartan accommodations of an ashram, yet the
facilities of the Jasmine Spa and Wellness Holistic Health Center are no different
from that of such a religious retreat.
Every morning guests
are treated to a breakfast of fresh fruits; the bowl never contains anything
besides papaya and pineapple which may work for the first and second day but it
does get utterly boring as you go through the week. The same also goes for the
remaining meals.
The center offers horseback rides to explore the estate but
the animals are visibly malnourished, so most would be averse to the idea of
riding such a poorly maintained horse. Language is a real problem for the
staff, so communicating with them when trying to ask for an upgrade of services
can be quite cumbersome.
Our verdict!
If you would like to go off the beaten track or are tired of
the sun and sand of the Dominican Republic, the Jasmine Spa and Wellness
Holistic Health Center will be a welcome break. Although the establishment
offers several packages including a 12 day stay, it would be best to stick with
the one or two day program. You will find that after a while, there simply
isn’t much to do and most guests are left pining for the bustling sounds and
sights that they left behind.
VH Gran Ventana
Beach Resort
Located in the quiet
and secluded Puerto Plata area of the Dominican Republic, the VH Gran Ventana
Beach Resort is marketed as the ideal hotel to enjoy the sights, sounds and
numerous offerings of the country. Perched along the famed shoreline, the
resort suits the tastes of even the more discerning travelers.
So, whether you are a couple on a romantic getaway or a
family guy traveling with kids in tow, VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort is bound to
appease you. While the affordable price tag of the rooms is a definite plus, it
also raises questions about the quality of the services offered. So, if those
mixed reviews have left you perplexed, here is a look at what is actually on
offer at this resort.
The location
Since almost every second hotel in the country is a beach
front property, the location of VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort certainly does not
work up to be its unique selling point.
However, if you are in the tropics to work on your tan and get some
surfing action, then the proximity to the beach and the host of water sports
offered will undoubtedly leave you with a smile on your face.
Despite a host of all inclusives in Puerto Plata, the area
has managed to retain some of its traditional, tropical charm. Guests get access
to a range of entertainment options including water parks, a local library and
other tourist attractions while being surrounded by the lush greenery that the
island nation is famous for.
The amenities and the
general look
Spread over an impressive area, the VH Gran Ventana Beach
Resort has 500 rooms and enough space to delight even the more serious nature
enthusiasts. The large complex is offered with the promise of better amenities
and a wide range of entertainment options that will keep guests coming back for
more.
Live entertainment, kids programs, 3 restaurants, 2 pools,
tennis courts and easy access to the bars located in nearby hotels like the Bluebay Villas Doradas are all on offer along with a
host of in room and on site amenities.
All rooms have a balcony that opens towards the tropics or
the ocean front. Apart from this, the suites come with bath attached,
telephone, TV, internet ports and more. The hotel also has a laundry service
and currency exchange desk along with complimentary wake up facility.
What works for the VH Gran
Ventana Beach Resort?
This is a no fuss hotel; guests are two minutes away from
the sand and the sun. Although the VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort cannot compete
with some of the exclusive services offered by many other resorts in the
region, the lower tariffs often make up for this.
The staff is
friendly, restaurants do offer delicious meals and there is plenty for the
family to do when staying at this resort, so what more could you possibly ask
for at that price?
What does not work in
favor of this resort?
Well you only get
what you pay for, and this principle is evident when staying at the VH Gran
Ventana Beach Resort. The rooms often prove to be too Spartan for many guests
who are left asking for numerous upgrades before they find a suite that works
for them.
The service is friendly but how helpful the staff is
entirely depends on how generous a tipper you are and their mood on the
day. There have been clients who were so
pleased by the service standards that they came back for a second round and
even those that left with a very bitter taste in their mouth.
Our verdict!
The VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort is no different from the
scores of budget all inclusives of Puerto Plata. Like the other establishments
in the category, they offer little by way of luxury and it is assumed that most
guest would like to make the better of the natural bounties of the Dominican
Republic like the beach and the rain forests. So, only the bare minimum is put
on the table.
If you are vacationing on a shoe string budget, this resort
will prove to be the right choice. However, if you appreciate the finer joys of
life, then you will need to move to a more up market hotel.
Be Live Grand Marien
Part of the
huge and distinguished Lifestyle complex of vacation resorts, one of the
distinctive advantages of taking your business to the Be Live Grand Marien is
that you can avail the facilities of the sister hotels in the area as well like
the Lifestyle Vacations holiday Club and even
the upcoming facility at Punta Cana .
The layout
includes a huge and sparkling pool as its central attraction which is flanked
by comfortable double and double deluxe rooms and also junior suites. The
resort boasts of a myriad of amenities, 5 restaurants, a range of entertainment
options and much more.
While the
internet abounds with positive reviews about this establishment, some guests
have also expressed a few concerns which compel people to think about how
appropriate it would be to spend their vacation at this resort. So, here is an
unbiased feedback on what to expect from your stay at this Puerto Plata all
inclusive.
The location
With the
beach right outside the door and an impressive pool inside the complex, if you
have some fun in the sun on your mind, you will be spoilt for choices when
staying at the Be Live Grand Marien. The hotel is no more than 6 kilometers
away from a range of tourists attractions, so even when you tire of the surf
and sand, you will have a lot to do.
From casinos
to museums and from shopping to places of historical attraction and more can
easily be accessed when staying at this resort. And, then there is the prospect
of enjoying a round of golf; the Be Live Grand Marien is one of the few hotels
in Puerto Plata that offer unhindered access to a world class, 18 hole golf
course, this is swinging and putting at
its best as you are surrounded by the immaculate natural bounties of the
tropics.
The amenities and the general look
The rooms
and suites are placed in clusters according to the class of accommodation; the
overlay of the resort includes several hotels, open entertainment space, enough
room for lounge chairs around the massive pool, a drink and snack bar and more. All rooms come with their private verandah
and guests can pick from views that open towards the ocean, the gardens or the
pool.
In room
features include a minibar which can be placed at the balcony for an extra
charge, a safety deposit box, TV with cable, iron, coffee maker, radio, a full
bath and air conditioning among others. Clients can also avail of larger rooms
which come with a private Jacuzzi and kitchen area. The resort has 2 adult pools and one kiddie
pool, baby sitting services and a host of entertainment programs.
What works for the hotel?
For one, this is among the few Puerto Plata
all inclusives that have their own casino, spa and mini golf course. With over
500 rooms to its credit the complex is expansive and very well kempt, so just a
walk around the grounds is a wonderful way to relax and enjoy the tropical
experience and fair weather of the country. The establishment boasts of several
facilities which are specifically designed with the comfort of their guests in
mind. For instance, families traveling with kids will certainly appreciate the
baby sitting facility.
Apart from
this, the fare served at the four a la carte restaurants and the one buffet
eatery is undoubtedly lip smacking. Guests can choose from Tex Mex, Italian and
sea food. The entertainment options offered by the resort include everything
from non motorized water sports to tennis, ping pong and badminton, nightly
live entertainment, Latin dance lessons and much more. So, even when you have
had your fill of the impressive coast line of the Playa Dorado, there is still
much to enjoy.
What does not work in favor of this
resort?
What is with Puerto Plata all inclusive and
the “one towel per guest” rule? This despite the fact that many clients are
left fuming at that prospect of using the same dirty towel every time they head
to the beach. Needless to say, this forced environmental consciousness does not
go down well with many, yet the hotel staff is at their un-courteous best when
people request more towels.
The house
keeping staff definitely needs to get their act together and do a better job;
however, the maximum client complaints are reserved for the animation team
which acts as if it is being forced into performing their dull programs for a
measly two hours in the evening. The food is good but more variety is certainly
needed and the room service staff needs to put in a greater effort to get the
dishes to the guests while they are still palatable.
Our verdict!
In a single sentence, no different from some
of the other 2 and 3 star all inclusive of Pueto Plata. In fact, its 3.5 star
rating is not entirely deserved. There have been numerous complaints of
un-inhabitable rooms beings opened up for guest with little concern for the
dank, musty smell and the mold in the bathroom.
So, if you
want to have a good time at the beach and do not mind average accommodation as
long as it is cheap, the Be Grand Live Marien will do; however, if you are
interested in an upscale resort, this is certainly not the place to go to.
BlueBay Villas Doradas
An expansive
property which has all the makings of a perfect Puerto Plata all inclusive, the
BlueBay Villas Doradas boasts of over 240 rooms spread over a massive complex.
So, if a festive environment and an active social scene is what you want to get
out your vacation in the tropics along with all the perks that you can expect
from being this close to the sand and surf, then this resort won’t disappoint.
However,
many clients believe that the BlueBay Villas Doradas is no different from the
scores of other establishments in the bustling Puerto Plata neighborhood.
Although the prices are affordable, the service leaves a lot to be desired. So,
what is the truth about this hotel and should you be staying with them on your
next trip to the Dominican Republic?
The location
The
establishment is a few minutes away from the beach and there are other famous
Caribbean sand stretches like the Long Beach in the vicinity of the hotel, so
you will certainly not want for sun and sand style fun. Also, the Puerto Plata
area is among the most hip localities in the country in terms of tourism.
Despite
being frequented by thousands of tourists every year, it has retained its
colonial charm and air of seclusion which is what appeals to most travelers. If
you are taking the family out for a vacation, this resort will undoubtedly make
everybody happy. There are at least two water parks within driving distance
along with several tourist attractions, a golf course and of course the town
center of Puerto Plata.
So, clients
do get a multitude of options when it comes to entertainment, yet they can
return to a quiet and tranquil environment at night down and get themselves
ready for the excitement of the next day.
The amenities and the general look
The sheer
size of this resort is undoubtedly one of its unique selling points; not only
does this translate to a greater number of options when it comes to room
choices but also, you get to mingle about with more people. In fact, at peak
times, the environment takes on a distinct festive flavor with buffets and a
host of group entertainment events which further add to the appeal of the
establishment.
Although no
different from the look of the other resorts in the area like the Occidental allegro Playa Grande, the white washed
buildings with the red roofs and the willowy palms swaying in between make for
a beautiful sight. Sparkling pools and lounge chairs complete the picture,
which is truly beckoning. In room amenities are again no different from other
establishments in the category and include a telephone, TV, cable service,
shower, safe, iron, hair dryer, mini bar, a terrace or balcony and others.
What works for the BlueBay Villas
Doradas?
Undoubtedly
the diverse and vast array of entertainment opportunities is what makes a stay
at the BlueBay Villas Doradas truly memorable. Among the more popular
activities offered are Merengue Classes that are perfect for couples on their
first honeymoon and even those that are celebrating their 10th or 15th
anniversary. After all, what would be better than spending an hour each day in
your partner’s arms as you sway away to the lilting melodies?
Of course, the fact that there is a golf
course in the neighborhood further raises the stock of this establishment. If
you can’t seem to keep yourself away from putting when on vacation, you sure
will appreciate the Par 72, 18 hole golf course.
Then there
are the usual basket of beach vacation options like surfing, kayaking and a
host of other water sporting activities. If you would like to unwind after a
day of fun and sun, there is also a spa at the resort where all the fatigue
from those tired muscles can be worked out.
What does not work in favor of this
resort?
While the
proximity of the facility to the beach is certainly appreciated by most, it
becomes hard to ignore the sheer amount of trash spewed out by the ocean in the
wake of the broken reef. Although the staff does try to keep the stretch as
clean as possible even clearing out the debris every day for the better part,
it is to no avail.
However, the
state of the beach has more to do with the tide and the amount of plant matter
in the water than the hotel staff. Also, the food is nothing to write home
about although most patrons are very happy with the three pools and the snack
and drinks bar. All in all, the hotel would be a much better establishment with
a new management in place as the existing honchos do display an apathetic
attitude towards the concern and well being of their guests.
Our verdict!
If you are
looking for budget accommodation in Puerto Plata that is quiet and just
adequate for an uneventful stay, the BlueBay Villas Doradas will suit the bill.
However, this also holds true in case of almost all other 3 and 4 star client
rating establishments in the area. In other words, there is little unique and
truly fabulous that this facility brings to the table.
To put it
simply, if you are not very fussy and are more bent on enjoying the offerings
of the country at large and the natural splendors of the tropics without
attaching too much importance to the luxury quotient of the hotel you are
staying at, this facility will work for you and it won’t tax your pockets much.
On the other hand, for people who are keen on the finer luxuries that money can
buy, this place will prove to be utterly disappointing.
Hacienda Suites
The mere
addition of the term “suites” does raise the expectation bar by several notches
when you consider a hotel. After all, while there is no dearth of resorts and
all inclusive in the Puerto Plata area, few of them cater to the tastes of the
more discerning clients who are looking to spend their vacation surrounded by
luxury.
While the
Hacienda Suites do hold a certain allure as most guests find the prospect of
spending their tropical vacation in a well maintained and upscale suite utterly
alluring, the question remains, does this facility deliver on its promise of
luxury combined with affordability?
The location
Situated on
the Confresi Beach in Puerto Plata, the resort is picture perfect for a fun
filled vacation in the tropics. With a stunning and verdant mountainous slope
providing the ideal backdrop to the Hacienda Suites, the complex sure does put
on display the best of what Mother Nature has to offer.
A mere 30
minutes drive from the airport, the resort is just a stone’s throw away from
the town center of Puerto Plata, a part of the island nation known for its
breath taking architecture and stunning shoreline. The proximity of the resort
to an un-spoilt expanse of sand means that guests are often spoilt for choice
when it comes to entertainment and dining.
The amenities and the general look
Made up of
quaint one and two bedroom apartments, a total of 88 suites are accommodated in
12 buildings across the complex. The three storey structures are built in
traditional architectural style and interspersed with pools, restaurants and
ample of greenery. In fact, the gorgeous
use of colors is enough to delight most clients.
All suites
come equipped with a shower, private bathroom, air conditioning, mini fridge,
TV, telephone, safety deposit box and a sofa. The 3 storey buildings are
constructed such that every suite has a balcony and clients can pick from a
terrace that opens towards the pool, mountain or garden.
In complex
facilities include several restaurants, a wellness center, laundry service,
high speed internet access at certain public areas across the resort, tour and
car rental desks, baby sitting, currency exchange center and a 24 hour pharmacy
and medical center.
What works for the Hacienda Suites?
There is
certainly no dearth of culinary options at the Hacienda Suites; from sumptuous
Italian fares at the Romano to the tangy Chinese treats at the Bamboo, then
there are the tropical delicacies served up at the main restaurant of the
resort. In fact, the welcome buffet with its astonishing diversity of tastes,
textures, aromas and colors is a veritable feast for the taste buds.
So, if you
are staying at the suites from Hacienda, you certainly won’t have to venture
out in search of food. Also, noteworthy is the sheer diversity of entertainment
options that the animation staff of resort whips up for its guests; from horse
riding lessons to golf, bicycling, tennis, snorkeling, wind surfing, dancing,
Spanish lessons, archery classes, water skiing, carbine shooting, boogie
boarding and more.
The best
part is that clients are never confronted by the sight of an overly crowded
pool side with guests battling for just the right spot in the sun. In fact,
although the resort is only a short
distance away from the beach, most guests are content working on their tan as
they lounge in the chairs at the pool side designated for their group of
suites. Also included in the resort layout is a VIP pool which is an experience
in itself.
What does not work in favor of this
establishment?
Possibly
because of the sheer demand of the suites at the resort, guest often land up at
a hotel that is packed to capacity and have to settle for the most inhabitable
of rooms in the establishment. While this would not be a problem if the clients
were to show up unannounced, the treatment is also frequently meted out to
people who have reserved a suite, months in advance.
Of course,
there are also some complaints from disgruntled clients who were just not given
the service they were paying for. There has been noise about almost everything
from tea makers that don’t work to mould in the bathroom; shoddy housekeeping
and inadequate service have also been the source of chagrin for many.
Our verdict!
All in all,
it seems that although the Hacienda Suites have worked for most clients, many
have had a hit or miss experience with the resort. Undoubtedly many guests are
forgiving of some of inadequacies of the establishment given its prime location
and the enthralling layout of the resort.
However,
people who are averse to the idea of scuffling with the service staff and yet
want a near perfect vacation experience, will have to take their business
elsewhere. If you are not particularly fussy, a stay at the Hacienda Suites
will leave you happy and rejuvenated. In fact, in this case, you could choose
any of the scores of Puerto Plata all inclusive hotels like the BlueBay Villas Dorados.
King Solomon Kosher Resort
The King
Solomon Kosher Resort is more a program than an actual hotel. In fact, they
move ever so frequently which does pose a problem for many people who book a
room at this establishments in the hopes of living in a certain area of the
Dominican Republic. For now, the management has managed to place the program at
the Playa Dorado, in the Celuisma Resort complex.
Although the
unique selling point of this establishment is undoubtedly the religious
overtones, a lot of doubts and concerns have been raised about the service
offered by the hotel. So, the question remains, is this resort even good enough
for the seriously faithful who would be willing to turn a blind eye towards
seemingly trivial aspects?
The location
The grounds
of the Celuisma Resort are undoubtedly gorgeous and well maintained. The estate
is well groomed with just enough shrubbery to give the complex an air of
natural tranquility. Located at the
Playa Dorado which is a popular tourist haunt of the area, the hotel does not
have a private beach but the sandy stretch that is in the vicinity of the
resort always has ample of space for people looking for some surf and sun.
The best
part of choosing accommodation in a thriving area of the island nation is that
guests are spoilt for entertainment choices and you will have more shopping
opportunities on your hands. Of course, this also means that you can simply
show yourself to another restaurant or bar when you have had your fill of the
fare laid out at the resort.
However,
this prospect may not appeal to the clients of the King Solomon Kosher Resort
since religiously prepared food is one of the reasons why they choose this
establishment over the other more general, all inclusives of Puerto Plata like
the Hotetur Dorado Club Resort.
The amenities and the general look
The pool is
placed bang in the middle of the resort with several willowy palms adorning its
periphery and the landscape in general. The green of the plants and the
shimmering blue of the water contrast beautifully with the white structures
that are embellished through the use red, thatched roofs.
In terms of
amenities, there is nothing in this resort that is not already on offer at the
other places. While they do claim to provide the regular TV, telephone, internet
and balcony in the room, how many of these services and amenities actually work
is a different matter all together.
What works for the King Solomon
Kosher Resort?
Apart from
the fact that it is one of the only resorts in the Puerto Plata area that offers
kosher vacations, the beach locale and the affordable tariff certainly work in
favor of this resort. The area of the hotel is ideal for couple’s or a family
vacation and the complex has all the facilities needed for a frolicking sojourn
in the tropics.
The
establishment offers special packages for Passover and other Jewish holidays
and even on regular days, their guests can enjoy authentic food that is
prepared in keeping with their religious inclinations. Unfortunately, this is
where the list of merits for this resort ends.
What does not work in favor of this
hotel?
Although
there have been some guests who have had a fabulous time at the King Solomon
Kosher Resort, most walk away from this establishments with a bitter taste. Not
only are most facilities sub standard but also the management frequently fails
to provide even the most basic amenities like fresh towels in the rooms and
running hot water.
But, what
really bites is that most complaints from clients fall on deaf years. In fact,
the managers and even the owners of the facility go out of their way to impress
on their guests that they are only getting what they paid for. However, the
truth of the matter is that you can get far better service for the same price
at another, regular Puerto Plata all inclusive.
Clients have
even complained about how the food was not up to the mark and usually served
late which leads to more than one skirmish in the dining hall. To put it
simply, you are certainly not going to get what you are shown at this resort.
Our verdict!
For the
truly devout who would not like to compromise on kosher meals, this
establishment will have to do as there certainly aren’t any other options in
the area. However, if you want to get your money’s worth while you enjoy a
relaxing vacation at a well maintained facility, skip this hotel and head over
to one of the other resorts. As far as hotels go, you will be spoilt for
choices in Puerto Plata from the upscale Casa Colonial
Beach Spa to the regular yet sufficient Iberostar
Costa Dorada, you will find these and more in the area.
Lifestyle Crown Villas
The prospect
of spending a vacation in gorgeous Mediterranean style villas built atop
rolling, verdant hills or majestic sea cliffs sure is enticing, and this is
what the Lifestyle Crown Villas seem to offer on the surface. However, to the
utter chagrin or most clients, the real picture is poles apart.
In fact,
many are left grappling inside secluded villas that are only perfect on the
outside but in dire need of maintenance inside. So, what is the story of this
establishment and is it really worth the extra money that you pay for those
spacious villas?
The location
Located on
the northern coast of the island nation, Lifestyle Crown Villas is a complex of
over 90 individual structures, each built to perfection in colonial style,
complete with its own private pool and gardens. Built along the secluded
coastline of the Confresi Beach, the villas afford complete privacy yet offer
unhindered access to the natural bounties of the tropical island.
The
establishment lies in the vicinity of the Ocean World Adventure Park, so
clients can simply walk down to the facility. Other attractions in the area
include the Puerto Plata city which is just half an hour away and a Casino and
Marina which are both just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. While the Puerto
Plata international airport is 30 minutes away, the Santiago International lies
an hour from the complex; this means that you can hire a cab or rent a car to
get around easily.
The amenities and the general look
The overall
look of the resort is a visual feast to say the least; the white washed villas
with the red roofs create a stunning contrast with the shimmering silver of the
water, the clear blue of the sky and the rhapsody of green that is the flora
around.
As you enter
the stucco plastered archway of the villas, you will find several vines of
bougainvillea, colorful hibiscus blooms and other tropical plants beckoning you
inside. Every private home comes with its own exclusive and unique furnishings
which not only include the best interior designing materials and products from
the world over but also an impressive inclusion of indigenous items like
Caribbean wattle work, bamboo and rattan.
The villas
have a master bedroom and 2 to 5 other guest bedrooms each with a balcony that
opens to a breathtaking sea view or towards the sight of the tranquil pool or
the majestic mountains. Facilities inside include a kitchen area, hair dryers,
minibar, TV with cable, DVD and video library.
The
occupants of each house are offered access to a golf cart to navigate through
the expansive grounds. The complex includes seven restaurants, a golf course
and a myriad of other entertainment facilities.
What works for the resort?
Whether you
are a family traveling with the kids and want to go for absolute luxury and
privacy or a group of friends who would like to stay at a secluded villa
instead of renting several rooms at a crowded hotel, these villas sure do hold
a lot of promise. The beach front properties with their own private pools also
mean that it almost feels like a luxury home away from home which is located on
your very own private beach.
The villas
come with dedicated personal staff, so clients can avail the services of a
butler and even sitters to watch the children. Ideal for a large group of
travelers, the Lifestyle Villas are among the very few resorts in the area
where no expense is spared to ensure that guests get top of the line amenities
and nothing but absolute luxury. Of course, this also translates to little
consideration for affordability.
Included in
the complex is a spa, a private riding school, an exclusive golf course,
evening entertainment, an amphitheatre with a seating capacity of 2000, water
sports center, mini club for the kiddies and a 5 star diving school.
What does not work in favor of this
hotel?
While the
seclusion of the villas and the expansive grounds of the resort seem like the
perfect setting for a relaxing and tranquil getaway, the picture perfect
backdrop quickly turns into a nightmare when guests have to walk their way for
the most trivial of commodities and facilities. In fact, many clients have
spoken about how they were not given a golf cart at all or were allotted a
rickety piece of scarp that would have to be physically pushed around.
While the
establishments is marketed as an upscale facility where the staff is dedicated
to ensuring that guests are pampered; in reality, most will break into a
marketing jig at the sight of a client with little thought to the actual
concerns and issues of the client. The introductory tour is no different, they
will coax you into attending and ten minutes into the presentation, it will all
be about selling their time share plan.
The villas
seem divine on the outside but once you cross the threshold, many are treated
to a view of broken furniture, cracked plaster on the walls, bugs squash marks
and dirty linen. The staff is also in the habit of over booking the resort to
the point where many travelers are left high and dry and only find out about it
once they get there.
Our verdict!
Lifestyle Crown Villas give most a renewed
appreciation for the regular Puerto Plata all inclusive like the VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort and even Lifestyle’s own Be Live Grand Marien. While these establishments only
offer meager facilities at best, at least you are paying for what they are
worth unlike the Crown Villas where there is literally a feeling of being
looted.
In fact, it
is surprising that an eminent hospitality venture like Lifestyle is not doing
enough to improve this resort. However, despite some complaints, the villas are
nearly perfect for a large party that wants to travel and stay together and
enjoy the beach vacation experience of the tropics.
